Students may not receive credit for both this seminar and the Negotiations and Mediation Seminar.

This class will be divided into three sections of 24 students, and each of the sections will be supervised and graded by two of the professors. Students will be randomly assigned to a section of 24 students on or before the first day of the class. They will receive their section assignment from the professors. Joint lectures and cross-section negotiations shared by the three sections will enrich the students' experiences in the course.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY AT ALL CLASS SESSIONS. Enrolled students must be in attendance at the start of the first class session in order to remain enrolled. Waitlisted students must be in attendance at the start of the first class session in order to remain eligible to be admitted off the waitlist. All enrolled students must attend each class session in its entirety. Failure to attend the first class session in its entirety will result in a drop; failure to attend any subsequent class session in its entirety will result in a withdrawal.

Enrolled students will have until the beginning of the second class session to request a drop by contacting the Office of the Registrar; a student who no longer wishes to remain enrolled after the second class session begins will not be permitted to drop the class but may request a withdrawal from an academic advisor in the Office of Academic Affairs. Withdrawals are permitted up until the last class for this specific course.

There is a course materials fee for this course, which covers outside vendor materials purchased on behalf of all enrolled students (these materials are distributed as part of the course’s in-class assignments and exercises). This fee is posted to your student account in August (for Fall courses) or December (for Spring courses), or as soon as you are enrolled in the course, whichever is later. Students who drop the course will be refunded the amount. Students approved to withdraw will not be refunded.

Chad Carr is a Senior Consultant at Vantage Partners, a consulting firm specializing in complex negotiations and the management of strategic business relationships. Professor Carr advises companies on major negotiations, working with business partners across multiple industries. He is a member of the firm’s Alliances practice.

Professor Carr was formerly a Lecture on Law and Clinical Instructor at the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program at Harvard Law School. At Harvard, Professor Carr developed and managed clinical projects in dispute resolution systems design, mediation and negotiation strategy. He has taught negotiation at Harvard Law School, the University of Oregon Law School and Vermont Law School. In addition, he regularly leads negotiation workshops for practicing lawyers and other professionals in private and public organizations. Professor Carr clerked for the Honorable Patti B. Saris in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He practiced corporate law at the Boston office of Ropes & Gray LLP.

Professor Carr is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and Harvard Law School. During law school, he was a mediator with the Harvard Mediation Program where he served as a Court Liaison, training and supervising new mediators. He was also a Hewlett Negotiation Research Fellow and an Editor of the Harvard Civil Rights Civil Liberties Law Review.
