LL.M. London Option

Georgetown Law offers the opportunity for a small number of its LL.M. students to participate in the LL.M. – London Option. Students in this program will spend the first semester at Georgetown Law in the heart of Washington, D.C. and the second semester at the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) in London, England.

CTLS is a unique program bringing together students from 23 law schools around the world. Students and faculty spend a semester in London focusing on international, comparative and transnational law in a diverse and multicultural setting. The London Option allows students to expand their networks to include not only the classmates and professors they will meet in Washington, but also those who come together at CTLS.

Students in the program may pursue either the General or International Legal Studies LL.M. During the first semester, they choose courses from the full curriculum offered to LL.M. students at the Law Center. During the second semester, students choose from the core and elective courses offered at CTLS and apply those classes toward the completion of the LL.M. The course selection at CTLS varies from year to year, but always offers a range of options taught by faculty members from Georgetown as well as from its co-founding and partner law schools. Tuition costs are the same for both semesters.

There are some important things to note about the London Option:

  • Students who wish to take the New York Bar and need an LL.M. from the U.S. in order to qualify should not take the London Option, as courses taken outside the United States do not fulfill the New York Bar requirements.
  • Students in the London Option will not be eligible to do a Certificate program in combination with their LL.M. degree.
  • Externships will not be available for London Option students.
  • London Option participants will not be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States after completion of their LL.M. studies under the F-1 visa regulations.
  • Students who wish to participate in the International Student Interview Program in late January will need to fly to the U.S. to attend this recruiting program.

To apply to the London Option, interested applicants should complete the regular application for the General or International Legal Studies LL.M., and submit an additional form, indicating an interest in the London option. If you have already applied to the LL.M. program for fall and wish to be considered for the London Option, you may submit the form separately from your application.
